No people ever knowingly, willingly gave away their freedom, liberty and
equality due to the "whims" of a MAJORITY. These things only perish, as a
rule, at the whim of some MINORITY -- usually an elite which CLAIMS to
represent the "higher principles" of ALL men. It's the elitists who despise
and fear "the masses" who should never be trusted.
The worst thing I can say about "the masses" is that they are foolish enough
to believe the false promises of their elites. But then, whose fault is it,
when elites, knowing that weakness, devote all their energy to "civilizing"
man by institutionalizing his gullibility?
Without fools, elites would have no one to exploit and would be seen for what
they are, sociopathic criminals --liars, thieves, blackmailers, and
murderers-- pure and simple.
All criticisms of "democracy" as "inevitably deteriorating into mob role"
ultimately go back to Plato, an elitist himself (being a dispossessed
aristocrat) and --beyond even Hegel-- the father of totalitarianism, equally
responsible for communism and fascism.
Even in HIS analysis, "mob rule" is confined to one brief moment in the
historic cycle when the masses, exhausted by betrayal, are persuaded to swap
"liberal" demagogues for an authoritarian elite, thus restoring (for Plato)
"the Golden Age" of autocratic rule.
(Plato's model for his "philosopher king" was an Oriental despot, "Sun-King"
Emperor of Persia, whose army almost conquered a Greece "weakened by
republican sentiments.")
