-Caveat Lector-
I have just finished two books which ought to be required reading for every
member of CTRL.
(1)*Cryptonomicon*, by Neal Stephenson, Avon Books, 1999, hc; $13.75 at
Amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0380973464/qid%3D928339196/002-0162189-0076639
Neal Stephenson's writing has been described as "Pynchon on speed."
*Cryptonomicon* is no exception. The exceedingly complex plot jumps between
World War Two and the very near future. It revolves around a highly
sophisticated encryption technique developed by an eccentric genius working
for Allied intelligence, and the involvement of his grandson in a scheme to
create an offshore "data haven" in Southeast Asia. You may (in fact probably
will) find your head spinning, but you will definitely keep reading... CTRL
members will discover a great many hints about connections and
interconnections which lead in some *very* interesting directions.
(2)*Icefire*, by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, Pocket Books, 1999, pb;
$5.59 at Amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/067101403X/qid=928339881/sr=1-2/002-0162189-0076639
If this book were just a techno-thriller in the Tom Clancy style, it would
worth reading. But it is somewhat more. On one level *Icefire* is the story of
a Nuclear Emergency Search Team (NEST) officer and a Greenpeace-type
environmentalist as they race to head off a global catastrophe. A mysterious
conspiracy (whose identity becomes clear as the plot evolves) plants six
nuclear devices on the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. When the bombs go off,
the ice slams into the ocean at 500 miles an hour, and a monster wave is born
that will soon threaten everything in the Pacific basin. I would recommend the
book just for the excitement...but there's more. Of particular interest to
CTRL will be the segments dealing with (are you ready for this?) HAARP and the
Aurora, including a fascinating and quite plausible account of what flying the
Aurora would be like. The book's authors obviously have some sort of inside
information, because their detail rings *very* true.
