If this book were just a techno-thriller in the Tom Clancy style, it would
worth reading. But it is somewhat more. On one level *Icefire* is the story
of
a Nuclear Emergency Search Team (NEST) officer and a Greenpeace-type
environmentalist as they race to head off a global catastrophe. A mysterious
conspiracy (whose identity becomes clear as the plot evolves) plants six
nuclear devices on the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica. When the bombs go off,
the ice slams into the ocean at 500 miles an hour, and a monster wave is
born
that will soon threaten everything in the Pacific basin. I would recommend
the
book just for the excitement...but there's more. Of particular interest to
CTRL will be the segments dealing with (are you ready for this?) HAARP and
the
Aurora, including a fascinating and quite plausible account of what flying
the
Aurora would be like. The book's authors obviously have some sort of inside
information, because their detail rings *very* true.
