By Lucianne Goldberg All things considered I would rather have had root canal today than to hear that Linda Tripp's has been indicted on two counts of "wiretapping" in The People's Republic of Maryland. You will hear all the arguments pro and con over the weekend because there isn't much going on. There are very few people to speak for Linda. She was and is a very private person. Her close friends have stuck with her during this endless ordeal and her lawyers and spokesperson Phil Coughter have remained steadfast. My E mail, phone calls and mail tell me that there is a great deal of sympathy and support for her across the country. The ironies pile in as fast as one can count them. Clinton and his immoral cohorts skate while an honest, decent and patriotic public servant is indicted for pure political vengeance. What amazes me is that the original reporting on this situation has been and is so sloppy. No one has pointed out that she was indicted for making one tape Count 1 - the Vernon Jordan tape she made after her lawyer told her taping was illegal in Maryland and on Count 2 - for giving that information to Newsweek. She made that tape to protect herself. She was being threatened by the President's girlfriend. She gave the information to Newsweek because she wanted to expose the President's sleazy and criminal behavior. All this would come out in a trial but I for one do not think there will be one. Here are some of the reasons. Linda's lawyers can call witnesses. Here is who they could call. William J. Clinton Monica Lewinsky Marcia Lewis Vernon Jordan Bruce Lindsay Sidney Blumenthal Betty Curry Well, you get the picture. She did not give our nuclear secrets to China. She did not lie under oath or threaten others to lie. She did not molest women and then blackmail them into signing false affidavits and perjure themselves. She did not sell off pieces of the White House and government for financial gain. She did not stand in front of the people of this country, stick her finger in their face and lie. She did not lie to her lawyer, her spouse, her children, nor did she ask anyone to lie for her. And yet...........Linda Tripp was indicted.
