Chinese Military Calls For Special Hacker Force

The Chinese military is looking for a few good men - to be trained in the
art of government sponsored hacking over the Internet.

According to a report by asia.internet.com, The Liberation Army Daily
newspaper, a "mouthpiece" of China's Peoples Liberation Army, recently
called for the development of a hacking (more commonly called "cracking")
capability made up of civilian experts and specially trained military
personnel that could engage in online and Internet warfare.

Problems have been steadily escalating recently between the Chinese
government and elements critical of the regime.

NATO's bombing of the China government's Belgrade Embassy in the recent
conflict in the Kosovo region, was followed by a number of incidents where
crackers obtained unauthorized access to several US government sites.

The Liberation Army Daily then claimed US hackers countered with
unauthorized access to a number of civilian sites in China. This, in turn,
apparently led to the military's call for hacker training for select
personnel.

As reported by Newsbytes, the Chinese government's recent clampdown on
supporters of the banned Falun Gong sect in the country also spilled over
onto the Internet, with Web sites originating in the US and the UK, as well
as Canada, reportedly being attacked and brought down because they provided
links to the sect's sites. The crackers were traced to Chinese domains.

Just this week Newsbytes reported that a Webmaster of an attacked site said
that Internet addresses used in the incident were registered to telephone
numbers in Beijing, which in turn were verified as belonging to the Internet
Monitoring Bureau of the Public Security Ministry.

Another Webmaster said that a denial of service attack on his site, which
hosts Falun Gong information, was traced back to the Beijing Application
Institute for Information Technology and the Information Center of Xin An
Beijing.

The Chinese government also extended its propaganda war on the cult to the
Internet recently with the launch of a special Website, "Expose the
fallacies of Falun Gong, safeguard the well being of the people."

The news comes at the same time as the Associated Press is reporting that
China has warned the US Congress today against backing moves by Taiwan
towards independence for the island. AP quotes a Chinese official as saying
Beijing was ready to pay "any price" to defend China's claim to the island,
which has functioned as a separate entity ever since the Communist
government took over the mainland in 1949 following a civil war.
