Y2K Bark Worse Than the Bite

“Son of a gun. The lights still work. The computer still computes. Nobody
blew Washington, Times Square or the Space Needle to smithereens. According
to our on-line banking, we still have money. We didn't have to fire up the
generator once or defend the homestead with our stash of firearms and ammo.
Now, what are we going to do with all this canned food and dried fruit?”

- Doug Thompson, Capitol Hill Blue, 1/1/00

Gingrich Back Off the Bench...

“Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on December 14 accused President Clinton
of making important military and other government policy decisions solely to
help wife Hillary’s New York Senate campaign. ... ‘This is an administration
that will release terrorists to help the president’s wife, that will close
down the Navy’s training facilities in Puerto Rico and exploit gays in the
military to help the president’s wife,’ Mr. Gingrich said in an interview
with the Washington Times. ‘And if she decides to go after the French vote,
I wouldn’t be surprised if he decides to give back the Louisiana Purchase,’
he said.”

- Washington Times Weekly, 12/26/99

...Urges Others to Do the Same

“The Georgia Republican also defended Speaker Dennis J. Hastert’s handling
of
the budget this year and ridiculed conservative Republican critics of the
party’s congressional leadership as ‘smart-aleck armchair quarterbacks.’
‘If
everyone who wants to gripe would go out and elect a Republican instead of
griping, they could control spending and cut taxes,’ he said.”

- Washington Times Weekly, 12/26/99

St. John’s Suicide Pact

“(John McCain and Bill Bradley) signed an agreement forswearing ‘soft money’
if they are the nominees of their parties. ... The issue of campaign finance
is...an issue that, if the polls mean anything at all, almost nobody cares
about. Given the overwhelming media preference for Democrats and the lack of
restraint in showing it, what Mr. McCain actually signed was a Republican
suicide pact. His obsession with campaign finance - Tucker Carlson of the
Weekly Standard calls it a ‘hobby,’ like a crazy uncle’s obsession with
taxidermy - is puzzling to anyone trying to figure out why he thinks a
suicide note is a winning card in Republican primaries. Of all the issues on
the radar screen, ‘campaign finance reform’ ranks close to the bottom,
somewhere between ‘worthwhile Canadian initiative’ and ‘Lower Volta textile
imports.’”

- Washington Times editor Wesley Pruden

Clinton/Gore vs. Common Sense

“The Clinton administration this week proposed a $690 million expansion of a
federal voucher program that helps poor families pay for housing. ... Yet Mr.
Gore and Mr. Clinton - beholden to the powerful education establishment -
adamantly oppose the same concept when it involves giving poor parents
alternatives to their dilapidated public schools. It’s not easy to reconcile
their conflicting positions with common sense.”

- Las Vegas Review Journal editorial, 12/30/99

Union Justice

“TV news crews filmed Philadelphia Teamsters viciously beating anti-Clinton
protesters during a Presidential visit last year. After much delay, two
Teamsters were ultimately convicted of the assault, which witnesses claimed
was incited by local Teamster boss John Morris. Last month, the new national
Teamsters office, headed by James P. Hoffa, ousted Mr. Morris, and in a raid
on his offices discovered a cache of shotguns, stun guns, helmets and pepper
spray that dissident members said Mr. Morris was assembling to disrupt the
coming Republican National Convention. The weapons and related equipment
were paid for with $700,000 in union funds. Despite all this, a federal
judge has just reinstated Mr. Morris, ruling that the national Teamsters
failed to show that an ‘emergency’ justified his removal. Philadelphia, the
site of next summer’s GOP convention, operates according to what even Ed
Rendell, its departing mayor, concedes is sometimes ‘strange justice.’ Mr.
Rendell, a former prosecutor, says that local elected judges are often
beholden to the unions that push their candidacies. ... A three-judge panel
that has oversight control over the entire Teamsters union will hold a
hearing to determine if a takeover of Mr. Morris’s local is justified. We
hope they receive a full presentation of the evidence. If they don’t, next
summer’s GOP convention could see Philadelphia officials just as surprised as
Seattle’s leaders were at what determined demonstrators in the streets are
capable of.”

- Wall Street Journal, 12/30/99
