The fellow who gets the good news is Senator Max Baucus (D-MT). His former chief of staff, Christine Niedermeier, filed a charge with the Senate's Office of Compliance, the Senate's watered-down, Mickey-Mouse version of the EEOC, complaining of sexual harassment and unlawful termination (because she refused his advances). The Office of Compliance found for Baucus. Niedermeier recently announced she won't pursue the matter further. There's bad news for Democratic freshman Congressman Joe Crowley of New York's 7th District, the upscale portion of Queens. (Yes, there is an upscale portion of Queens, very upscale as a matter of fact.) Crowley got his seat by ordination of his predecessor, Tom Manton, because Manton, also the head of the Queens Democratic Party, waited until the filing deadline had passed in 1998 before announcing his retirement, then engineered a backroom plot to hand the nomination to Crowley without voter participation. That maneuver naturally frosted a few ambitious Queens pols, so they determined to try to unseat Crowley this year. It appears that the three leading Crowley rivals -- state Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, New York City Councilman John Sabini and fellow Councilman Walter McCaffrey -- decided in some way to unite behind McCaffrey. And there's continuing bad news for Democratic Congressman Jim Traficant of Ohio's 17th District. The state Auto Workers Union has endorsed one of his primary opponents, state Senator Robert Hagan, and the state AFL-CIO has decided to remain neutral. One or more indictments of Traficant are expected any day. ~Tiresias Congressional Hearings: http://www.votenet.com/today/hearings.html Do you have a contribution to make to a congressional hearing? Even if you can't go to Washington to testify, you may be able to get your position in the record. Call the committee or subcommittee involved (the Capitol switchboard is 202/224-3121), tell the staffer in charge of the hearing you want to submit a written statement and ask for instructions. It's simple! Votenet Today Insider provides news from the inner workings of our nation's capital, including upcoming legislation, what's happening behind the scenes, and how the actions of Congress really affect you. The first person to correctly identify the author of the Tiresias column will receive a copy of Congressional Quarterly's "Politics in America - 2000," due to be published this summer. ------------------Votenet Today Insider-------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- Transcripts http://www.votenet.com/today/transcripts/02-23-00_01.html DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES PARTICIPATE IN DEBATE, APOLLO THEATRE, NEW YORK FEBRUARY 21, 2000 http://www.votenet.com/today/transcripts/02-22-00_01.html GEORGE BUSH AND GOV ENGLER ON ABC GOOD MORNING AMERICA FEBRUARY 18, 2000 http://www.votenet.com/today/transcripts/02-22-00_02.html MCCAIN AFTER SOUTH CAROLINA ON CNN'S ``LATE EDITION'' FEBRUARY 20, 2000 U.S. House of Representatives House Roll Call Vote: 18 Description: To award a Congressional gold medal to John Cardinal O'Connor, Archbishop of New York Date: 2/15/00 Bill: H.R.3557 Action: Suspend the Rules and Pass Result: PASSED Yea = 413 Nay = 1 Not Voted = 21 Richard E. Bush sat in Jimi's Restaurant in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak Tuesday morning, sipping his coffee and waiting for a waffle. Across the table, Michigan Gov. John Engler warmed up radio audiences and then passed the cell phone across the table. He knew the race was close. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story10.htmlAfter bumpy ride home, McCain takes it easy on primary day PHOENIX (AP) - Sen. John McCain was at home Tuesday with one primary-day advantage over George W. Bush: He got to cast a vote. The bus whisked him to his Phoenix home, where he was spending the day with his family before having supporters over for dinner in the evening. Bush, meanwhile, continued to campaign in Michigan. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story1.htmlOverly simple solutions in a crackling debateWASHINGTON (AP) - Al Gore and Bill Bradley spoke in their latest debate as if the stroke of a presidential pen could stop police from pulling drivers over because of their race. The complexities of racial profiling were barely hinted at as the vice president and former New Jersey senator competed for the support of minorities with bold - and sometimes overreaching - claims about fighting discrimination. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story11.htmlDemocrats, Republicans face Feb. 29 contestsWith Michigan and Arizona behind them, the Republicans will now square off on Feb. 29 in Virginia, North Dakota and Washington state. The Democrats will also compete in a primary in Washington. Texas Gov. George W. Bush has his eye on the Republican primary in Virginia, a conservative Southern state politically similar to South Carolina, where he decisively beat Sen. John McCain of Arizona. At stake in Virginia are 56 delegates in a winner-take-all primary. At the national convention, 33 delegates will come from the state's 11 congressional districts, joined by 23 at-large delegates. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story2.htmlReligious broadcaster attacks McCain official as 'vicious bigot' YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson is using a recorded telephone message to attack an official in John McCain's campaign as ``a vicious bigot who wrote that conservative Christians in politics are anti-abortion zealots, homophobes and would-be censors.'' Robertson's remarks refer to former senator Warren Rudman of New Hampshire, who is McCain's national campaign chairman. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story12.htmlBradley questions Gore's consistencyGARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) - Pulling his criticisms of Al Gore together into a single theme, Bill Bradley said today his own views on abortion, guns and other issues were ``clear, consistent, reliable.'' ``What do we really know about Al Gore?'' he asked. On tighter gun control, guaranteed abortion rights and stricter campaign finance laws, Bradley repeated over and again: ``It's what I believe, it's what I've always fought for, and it's what I'll do as president.'' http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story3.htmlGOP makes little headway in reining in lawsuits WASHINGTON (AP) - Once again this year, House Republicans are pushing through legislation to protect businesses from costly, pernicious lawsuits. And once again, there is almost no chance their determination to enact change will succeed. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story4.htmlWhitewater prosecutors ask court to keep Hubbell guilty plea WASHINGTON (AP) - Whitewater prosecutors are asking the Supreme Court to preserve presidential friend Webster Hubbell's guilty plea to a misdemeanor tax charge, in a case that seeks to clarify the reach of some grants of immunity from prosecution. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story5.htmlPhilanthropy spurs hot trend in education - after-school programs NEW YORK (AP) - The buses at Public School 27 have long gone, but fifth-grader Shanna Holmes is still in a classroom, busily creating an elaborate pop-up greeting card. After-school programs like that at Public School 27 are a growing trend nationwide, spurred on by charity foundations which, in turn, get help from community groups and government. Free after-school programs are popular with parents, especially as the number of working mothers increase. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story6.htmlVietnam criticizes McCain for torture allegationsHANOI, Vietnam (AP) - Vietnam has criticized Republican presidential candidate John McCain for claiming he was tortured during 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war in the infamous ``Hanoi Hilton'' and using derogatory terminology for Vietnamese. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story7.htmlBradley Links Gore to NRANEW YORK (AP) - From the stage at the Apollo Theatre to a ballroom at Adelphi University, Bill Bradley opened a furious two-week sprint to the March 7 primaries, accusing Al Gore of being a closet conservative with a past as ``poster boy'' for the National Rifle Association. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story8.htmlClinton pardons black professor who claimed draft system was racistWASHINGTON (AP) - President Clinton has granted a pardon to Preston King, who fled to England 39 years ago to avoid a prison sentence for draft evasion. King, now 63, was a graduate student when he fled from Albany, Ga., in 1961 after being sentenced to serve 18 months in prison. He is now a chairman of political science at Lancaster University in England. http://www.votenet.com/today/story/02_23story9.htmlAP content Copyright (c) 1999 The Associated Press*************************Copyright 1999 Netivation, Inc.
