This reminds me of something I experienced myself. In 1971, I was one of the
thousands arrested during the MayDay actions in D.C. One of the people in my
cell was a civil rights lawyer, with the National Lawyers Guild, and he
tried to get the police sergeant overseeing the cell block to recognize that
our rights were being violated. The sergeant showed his erudition by
responding, "The Constitution was written in 1776, and besides it don't
apply here."
