Christian Conservatives Suffering Abused Spouse Syndrome

By Chuck Baldwin

August 4, 2000

Two recent reports from the Republican National Convention
in Philadelphia really caught my eye. A Chicago Tribune
story begins, "Social conservatives, banned from the
spotlight of the Republican National Convention, gathered
to pay tribute to their own Wednesday at a public hall
miles away from the arena where the party is showcasing its
more mainstream speakers."

Next, a Scripps-McClatchy Western Service report begins,
"Christian conservatives tuning into the Republican
National Convention this week – even gavel-to-gavel
coverage on cable – have heard next to nothing from the
podium speakers about the core issues that have galvanized
them into a political force over the past two decades."

For a man who is noted to wear his religion on his sleeves,
King George has certainly given his fellow believers the
royal snub. Pro-abortion Colin Powell is preferred over
America’s most articulate pro-life statesman, Alan Keyes.

At the same time, in order to demonstrate to the world that
Dubya is "tolerant" and "compassionate," Rep. Jim Kolbe, an
out-of-the-closet homosexual, was invited to address
convention delegates. Nowhere to be seen is Gary Bauer or
even Steve Forbes. It’s like social conservatives have a
communicable disease and have all been quarantined.

In spite of this rudeness, Christian conservatives continue
to sing the praises of the Republican Party. This situation
reminds me of the poor wife who continues to stand by her
abusive husband. When confronted with the ill treatment
being inflicted upon her, she responds, "Where can I go?"
She is more afraid of being alone than she is of being with
a tyrant-husband.

It was an unholy marriage to begin with, this marriage
between Christian conservatives and the Republican Party.
We couldn’t see the dangers of it back in 1980 because the
groom was an articulate, principled conservative who openly
embraced the fundamental tenets and ideals of conservatism.
Not only did he give conservatives a place at the table,
but also he put us at the head of the table. We were
instantly spoiled!

It is that hallowed position that Christian conservatives
are salivating over. They have been put out of the palace,
and they desperately want back in! It’s hard to enjoy bread
and water after having tasted steak and shrimp.

There is one little problem: G. W. Bush is no Ronald
Reagan! As this convention demonstrates, Christian
conservatives will only be given the crumbs from this "new
kind of Republican." And just like that abused wife, when
confronted with this reality, they reply, "Where can we
go?"

Where we can go is to the same place our Founding Fathers
went: straight into the arms of the all-powerful God!
Conservative Christians are looking in the wrong place for
deliverance. We should do what American patriots have
always done: take our stand for principle and truth and let
the chips fall where they may! If every Christian in this
country would do what his conscience tells him to do and
would stop worrying about what the political pundits say,
we might find that God is willing to do for us what he did
for our fathers. However, since it doesn’t appear that this
will soon take place, Christian conservatives should expect
to eat more leeks and garlic, a Bush administration
notwithstanding.

A vote for Bush or Gore is a vote to continue Clinton policies!
A vote for Buchanan is a vote to continue America!
Therefore a vote for Gore or Bush is a wasted vote for America!
Don't waste your vote! Vote for Patrick Buchanan!

Today, candor compels us to admit that our vaunted two-party system is a
snare and a delusion, a fraud upon the nation. Our two parties have become
nothing but two wings of the same bird of prey...
