Bush Wins Endorsement of Chicago F.O.P.

Chicago (CNSNews.com) - Texas Gov. George W. Bush accepted an
important union endorsement Monday night, and some say he can
thank Chicago-style politics for the honor.
The Chicago Fraternal Order of Police broke with tradition and
threw its support to the Republican presidential nominee, in what
many officers called a deliberate a jab at Chicago Mayor Richard
M. Daley, brother of Al Gore's campaign manager.
The 17,000-member police union has been working without a
contract with city hall for nearly a year and a half.
Bush accepted the nomination, saying if he's elected, he plans to
usher in "the responsibility era." "I believe in tough love,"
Bush said. "If you break the law, you will be held accountable."
In an apparent dig at President Clinton, Bush declared that he
will set the tone for the responsibility era, by serving the
"highest office in the land" with dignity and honor.
Bush did not discuss his support for concealed weapons laws, an
issue rejected by some officers who never know when they'll face
the business end of a gun. But one Chicago beat cop, who was shot
and paralyzed on October 16, 1996, indicated that the violence
done to him will not undermine his support for Bush.
Officer Jim Mullins, speaking laboriously in between spurts of
oxygen from his ventilator, said he supports the Texas Governor
because of his "strict enforcement of gun laws - so that these
criminals quit getting off so lightly."
Bush, kneeling by Officer Mullins' wheelchair, kissed the
policeman on the forehead after receiving Mullins' endorsement.
When asked if he worries that Bush's record of supporting
National Rifle Association measures in Texas could ultimately
lead to a federal concealed-carry law and more guns on the street
in Illinois, F.O.P. President Bill Nolan shrugged and said, "He
may, or he may not, we don't feel it's that big of an issue."
Bomb and arson detective Sy Komorowski echoed that sentiment,
saying, "More gun laws aren't going to solve anything.
Enforcement of the existing laws is what's going to take care of
things."
Nolan denied the union's endorsement of Bush comes in retaliation
for the lagging contract negotiations. The F.O.P is particularly
upset about a very unpopular demand the city has added to the
proposed contract: mandatory retirement at age 63. Officers who
will be forced out before reaching the twenty-year pension mark
are fighting this provision especially hard.
Lt. Joe Fitzsimmons said a vote for Al Gore is a vote for Mayor
Richard Daley. Fitzsimmons noted the lieutenants' union
originally endorsed Gore, but it is switching its vote to Bush
because Gore "abandoned" them, after promising to intervene in
negotiations.
"Benefits, pay, working conditions -- these are bread and butter
issues for the union. Where Bush stands on gun control is
irrelevant to us at this level," Fitzsimmons said.
Bush did not comment on the negotiations, and his Illinois
Campaign Chairman, Gov. George Ryan, told the local media that
voters will support Bush for his record, not as a way to slight
the mayor.
