Of course, over the course of Canada's history many people died trying
to reach these shores - a good example is the Irish Famine. However, in
recent history Canada has become a country of choice for people fleeing
their homelands - notably Asia this past spring and summer. We have a
huge Asian population on our West Coast, and there is now a thriving
trade where horrible captains of boats cram people in like sardines,
charging them huge sums of money, and then dumping them either in the
water off the coast, where some drown, or on the coast. The West Coast
of Canada, (British Columbia) around the Vancouver area, has a temperate
climate, somewhat similar to Ireland. In any event, the people
smuggling operations turned into a huge nightmare this summer. And it
is not just on the West Coast either. People from all over the world
want to move here, and do.
