On Thursday, August 24th, Woody Harrelson was acquitted of possession of marijuana in the same small Kentucky town. Six jurors deliberated for just over 30 minutes before handing down a "not guilty verdict." Many cited "a lack of evidence" and also claimed that they understood that there was a clear distinction between industrial hemp and marijuana. Woody stands victorious with his legal defense team. Photographed by Dan Skye. Lead defense attorney Charles Beal said that Harrelson's act "was a matter of intent," and added, "He knew he was challenging a vague law and he knew what he was planting." Two lower courts had ruled his arrest was unconstitutional. However, last spring the Kentucky State Supreme Court ruled that Harrelson would have to stand trial, stating that hemp in fact is included in the marijuana statute. Former Kentucky Governor Louie B. Nunn, also represented Harrelson and made the closing argument for the defense. He cited Kentucky's history as the nation's largest hemp producer prior to its criminalization. Nunn also took a bite of a hemp candy bar and said, "Now I have hemp on me and in me. I guess you'll have to arrest me, too!"
