Linda ------------ From: "Steven Hoffman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Candidate speaks in Auburn Date sent: Tue, 3 Oct 2000 15:46:04 -0400 October 3, 2000 Buchanan: Americans first By David A. Sargent Special to the Sun Journal AUBURN - About 150 Pat Buchanan supporters cheered their candidate Monday night at a rally at Edward Little High School as a group of several dozen young demonstrators presented orderly opposition to his positions. The Reform Party candidate repeated his outrage at being excluded from tonight’s presidential debate in Boston. He said the Reform Party deserves to be in the debates because the party receives federal funding and taxpayers have a right to hear what that share of election funding represents. The youthful demonstrators, most too young to vote, waved signs and chanted before Buchanan’s talk and they gathered in four or five small clusters after the rally where they continued their political arguments among themselves. During the talk, they stood in a row along the back wall of the ELHS half-court gymnasium setting. There were no surprises in Buchanan’s remarks. He covered many of the conservative issues with which he is identified and responded forcefully to several opponents who charged him with bigotry over his pro-life and anti-civil union stands. “If you take a stand on these issues, you’re going to get called names,” he said. Buchanan said he would strive to provide an administration “that constantly and consciously puts Americans first.” “We must never surrender the sovereignty and the liberty of the United States,” he declared. He said he disagrees with Vice President Al Gore because of his positions on many issues and he disagrees with Texas Gov. George W. Bush because “he won’t fight Mr. Gore.” His animated presentation served as a rehearsal for his appearance less than an hour later on CNN’s “Larry King Live.” He repeated most of his Auburn rally statements on that national broadcast shot at WMTW. On the subject of education, Buchanan said, “The federal government should have no role in education from kindergarten through high school,” but he quickly back-pedaled as a young man seated in the audience in a wheelchair shouted, “What about special ed? What about special ed?” Buchanan said Washington should send money for special education back to the states in the form of block grants and the states should determine how it should be spent. [NOTE FROM LINDA: "Back-pedaled" ??? Pat did NOT backpedal - he CLARIFIED. The Federal Govt gets out of our education system and the power AND money goes back to the states] However, if elected, he said, he would “shut down the Department of Education.” He charged that Bush and Gore “are taking the nation in the wrong direction on issue after issue.” Calling the bombing of Serbia “an unjust war,” Buchanan said his first action after becoming President would be to “take the troops out of Kosovo and put them on the border of California and Mexico.” Buchanan said the government should put a stop to what he claimed is a steady stream of thousands of illegal immigrants across the border daily. He denounced the recent approval of the RU-486 abortion pill; he denounced favored trade status for China, and the North American Free Trade Agreement; and he called for “a strong, clear-eyed foreign policy.” He warned that both the Republican and Democratic parties are allowing America to drift toward participation in world government Asked what the U.S. Supreme Court would be like in his administration, Buchanan said, “I would appoint pro-life constitutionalist conservatives.” Following a 45-minute talk and question-and-answer session, Buchanan signed many autographs and talked one-on-one with many from the audience. He and his wife, Shelly, were among the last 20 or 30 people to leave the gymnasium. Julie Tosswill, vice chairman of the Maine Reform Party, said she had hoped for a larger turnout. She blamed news media apathy. Buchanan has been a senior adviser to three presidents and twice been a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. From 1966 through 1974 he was a confidant and assistant to Richard Nixon. He challenged George Bush for the Republican nomination in 1992 and almost upset the president in the New Hampshire primary. In 1996 he won the New Hampshire primary, and went on to finish second to Sen. Robert Dole with three million Republican votes. >From 1985 to 1987, Buchanan was the White House director of communications for President Ronald Reagan. -------- end ----------- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On the Trail.... with Pat Buchanan and Ezola Foster http://www.buchananreform.com/trail/trailmain.asp ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Internet Brigade Headquarters http://www.buchanan.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BUCHANAN-FOSTER 2000 HQ 1-800-GO-PAT-GO http://www.buchananreform.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U.
