-Caveat Lector-

<<<I would have to say that history, particularly before Gettenburg, shows
that man is generally self regulating. The view that man, not knowing the
christian god, is not capable of organized society, fairness and freedom, or
self control. The facts do not support this. Vast areas of he world did
not know the christian god, but managed to attain high levels of
sophistication in both technology and culture. >>>

I agree totally: the ancient Chinese civilization, the ancient Egyptians,
Greece and Pagan Roman civilization all come to mind here. In fact, 99.8% of
man can get along just fine without religion, but I'm not so sure about
governance. I agree, in a way, with the mindset which says that man left to
his own devices, would act in a selfish, greedy, and erratic way. But I
don't think Xtianity is going to cure this, no matter what Xtianity has to
say. On the other hand, this mindset (which says that man is inherently
corrupt) does not account for altruistic behavior. It is probably one of
those BIG LIES that Man is inherently Evil, an idea which self-propetuates.
And, in a System which does not reward selfless behavior, what can one
expect but to see people acting selfishly, greedily and evilly? In other
words, a human people-centered system has never been given a chance.

>From what I can see, the only path left is higher consciousness. It's very
interesting to see that many people are coming to a higher consciousnes,
like the human rights activists, the animal rights activists, and
environmentalists. These are good signs, but they are up against a
"profit-maximizing" global economy. Not to mention the fact that those who
are not "evolved" are not necessarily "good", either, by reason of their
"simplicity" (something Henry David Thoreaux maintained, I think), and there
is no reason to believe that any average person will always act
altruistically nor fairly. So, it's a pretty long haul altogether for those
anarchists who are for less government.

I have come to agree completely with Karl Marx on one thing: that religion
is the opiate of the people. It's a form of mind control used by the System
to its advantage. Further, if one traces the roots of Puritanism back to
England, some elements of which are found in many of Dickens' novels, one
gets the impression of their extreme bizarre religious behavior -- the
forerunners of today's denominations of Xtian fundamentalists. And there you
have it.
