Prince Charles has dedicated a shrine at his 'temple' on his Highgrove estate
to the former Poet Laureate, the Satanist Ted Hughes. It now transpires that
Prince Charles and Ted Hughes had a long-term 'spiritual' association.

The Poet Laureateship is an appointment of the monarch, in fact the Poet
Laureate is an Officer of the Royal Household and receives a salary therefrom.
BTW Prince Charles has also 'prayed' at his 'temple' with the Archbishop of
Canterbury.

[Captions to photos published with the article:

"Hughes's tragic marital background had echoes of Charles's"

"Charles and Hughes shared a passion for field sports and would fish and shoot
together" - worthy of note because killing animals was a common theme in the
Satanist Hughes's poetry]

Prince makes shrine to Ted Hughes
Nicholas Hellen and Richard Brooks

PRINCE CHARLES has dedicated a temple in his Gloucestershire garden to Ted
Hughes, in tribute to the private role played by the late poet laureate as his
spiritual adviser.

Even intimates of the prince knew little of the nature of the relationship he
forged with Hughes. Now he has made it tangible by placing a plaque in his
private sanctuary.

The recognition given by Charles to Hughes's role had previously been given
only to one other person: the late Sir Laurens van der Post, who once led the
prince on retreat into the Kalahari desert and became godfather to Prince
William.

Hughes, poet laureate from 1984 until his death at 68 from cancer in 1998, was
a frequent guest at Highgrove and he shared with the prince an unconventional
spiritual curiosity. His presence will now live on in two commemorative stained
glass windows installed in the prince's private temple, hidden in a glade in
the grounds.

Officials at St James's Palace said this weekend that a plaque had been placed
in the sanctuary since its opening a year ago, stating simply: "Windows
dedicated to Ted Hughes, Poet Laureate." They were created by the Shropshire
artist John Napper and depict flowers, leaves and scenes from nature.

According to Charles Morris, who designed the sanctuary, it was built entirely
of natural materials, in accordance with the Gaia theory, which holds that a
web of links between living things controls the future of the world.

Hughes's widow, Carol, who married him in 1970, is one of the only people to
have seen the interior of the sanctuary, built of dried Highgrove clay with
chestnut cladding on a pitched oak roof. Morris said: "The interior has not
been photographed at all. Visitors to Highgrove are not shown the inside."

A forthcoming biography of Hughes by Elaine Feinstein will describe how the two
men had a shared passion for field sports. They shot and fished together in
Scotland, on Hughes's visits to Balmoral, and went on expeditions on Dartmoor,
where the Yorkshire-born Hughes lived for most of his last 30 years.

This weekend Ian Cook, a close friend of Hughes, said he took part in the
fishing expeditions, but declined to comment further. Cook, an art dealer who
lives in Exeter, was entrusted by Hughes with the task of scattering his ashes
on Dartmoor.

Laureate poems were not his forte, but it is understood that Hughes would read
poetry to Prince William and Prince Harry on his visits to Highgrove. In a
private letter to Tony Blair, his widow wrote that Hughes believed there was a
strong mystical link between the monarch and poet laureate.

Further clues to Hughes's role are revealed in hitherto unseen letters lodged
at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Feinstein said there were also many
letters from Hughes to the Queen Mother.

There are striking parallels between aspects of their private lives. Hughes was
pilloried for the death of his first wife, Sylvia Plath, who descended into
mental collapse before gassing herself.

Elizabeth Sigmund was a friend both of Plath, who dedicated The Bell Jar to
her, and Hughes, who asked her and her then husband to move into his Devon home
after Plath's death, because it carried too many painful associations for him
to remain there.

She said she could understand the strength of the bond that linked Hughes to
Charles. "Both experienced difficult marriages to beautiful, very talented
women who in the end they could not be happy with. I think this experience
would inevitably bring them close together."

The prince has learnt to endure mockery for his spiritual curiosity. He was
ridiculed for his four-day journey into the Kalahari with van der Post, who was
blamed for supposedly teaching him how to talk to his plants.

Hughes's reputation has also been questioned since his death. Former lovers,
including Emma Tennant, the novelist, have come forward to destroy the myth
that he lived for years as a saintly recluse after the suicides of Plath and
his common-law wife Assia Wevill, who also killed their four-year-old daughter.
