FEC to Release Records in Democratic Fund-Raising Probe

WASHINGTON (AP) - Documents from a federal probe into campaign activities
coordinated by the Democratic National Committee and AFL-CIO will be
released despite objections by the DNC and union.

The Federal Election Commission voted 4-0 in closed session Wednesday to
open for public inspection roughly 36,000 pages of records from its
investigation.

The DNC and AFL-CIO contended many of the documents contained confidential
information and should be withheld from public view.

The commission released about 6,000 pages in the spring, then withdrew the
records after the DNC and the union objected.

The FEC concluded last fall that close ties between the union and the DNC
during the 1996 election were not illegal due to a federal court ruling
imposing a stricter standard for determining illegal coordination.

The commission began investigating after Republicans complained that the
AFL-CIO spent up to $35 million to help Democrats in the 1996 elections.

Republicans contended that the level of coordination between union and
party officials made the spending illegal.
