Condit Attacks Calls to Resign

WASHINGTON - Rep. Gary Condit lashed out yesterday after the two biggest
papers in his home district - the Modesto Bee and the Fresno Bee - called
on him to resign.
The beleaguered congressman charged he had been treated unfairly - and
indicated he planned to speak out publicly in the near future about the
Chandra Levy story.
"It is terribly unfair and disappointing that the Bee would have come to
any decision about me without first allowing the investigation to
continue, and hearing what I have to say," Condit said.
He said he hoped constituents would reserve judgment "until they have
heard what I have to say, which I plan to do very soon." The Modesto Bee
and its sister paper, The Fresno Bee, both urged in their editorials
yesterday that Condit step down, accusing him of violating the public
trust by not being up-front with what he knew about his missing lover.
"His behavior since Chandra Levy disappeared more than three months ago
has been abhorrent," the Modesto Bee said in its Sunday editions.
"Condit has offered no explanation, no defense, no remorse. While
showing little concern for the missing former intern, he has spun,
stalled and stonewalled. "Too much has happened - and not happened -
this year for him to remain this region's congressman.
"Resignation is the proper course because Condit has irrevocably
violated the public trust. He has abused his office, deceived his
constituents and given Congress another black eye." The Fresno Bee
published its own equally frank editorial yesterday, calling for Condit
to resign. Both the Modesto and the Fresno Bee are owned by the
McClatchy newspaper chain.
"Throughout the much-publicized disappearance of Chandra Levy, we have
attempted to give Condit the benefit of the doubt while urging him to
speak publicly in detail about his involvement," it said.
"He has refused to do that, even while disturbing details about his
conduct became public.
"Even with a young woman's life at stake, Condit chose to protect his
political career rather than help find a woman he claimed to be a
friend. When decency was called for, Condit failed." In his reply,
Condit charged that he had not been given a fair chance to be heard by
the Bee's editorial board.
"My 30 years in public service should have earned me that much
consideration," he said. "The Bee's conclusion, that my refusal to
publicly disclose details of this case is a violation of the public
trust, is an unfortunate misunderstanding of the difference between my
cooperation with the police and my unwillingness to give in to media
demands that I immediately bear all parts of my and my family's private
life."
