-Caveat Lector- [Sec'y Gen. of Arafat's Fatah] Barghouthi reiterates right of resistance within '67 borders - ["temporary" ceasefire "necessary"] ************************************************************************
By Nabil Atallah 12 December 2001 The Jerusalem Times [Palestinian publication] Marwan Barghouthi, Secretary-General of Fatah's Higher Committee, in Ramallah, stated Palestinians had the right to resist Israeli occupation within the 1967 borders and called last Tuesday, December 11, for an urgent meeting of the PNA and all Palestinian factions. The main focus of the meeting would be to formulate a strategy in response to Israel's escalating violence. "The only way to stand firm and united against Israel's ulterior motive is through internal dialogue to establish a national policy which would prevent the PNA from having to cave in to the unrealistic demands of the Israelis and the US", said Barghouti. He believed that the Israeli government was trying to destroy both the PNA and undermine Arafat by toppling him, thereby ending the Intifada, with the tacit support of the Americans, the silence of the Arab countries and the absence of an active European role. Barghouthi described the current situation, facing both the Palestinians and the PNA, as the most serious since the eruption of the Intifada and outlined his four-pronged strategy which he believed the Palestinians should adopt to protect accomplishments achieved so far: The fulfillment of national goals required the protection of the PNA as an entity; maintenance of national unity; the continuation of the resistance in the form of the Intifada; and avoiding embarrassing the PNA before the international community. ********* "However, a temporary suspension of military operations is necessary", he explained. *********** ( highlights are mine- Nurev ) "Even though we have the right to resist, under the current circumstances with all the international pressure and the silence of the Arab world, ********** it is in the interests of the Palestinian cause and the continued survival of the PNA to halt all military activities". ************ He also demanded that the PNA cease arresting Hamas and Islamic Jihad activists. In his criticism of the current arrest campaign carried out by the PNA, he said it would not have the desired outcome and would also not reduce Israeli and US demands as Sharon had already decided to topple Arafat. Barghouti concluded that Arafat was under immense pressure at present and everybody needed to work together to ease this pressure and confirmed that most Palestinian factions had expressed their readiness to comply with any national consensus reached. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
