Pak seeks UN intervention to ease tension with India PTI United Nations, January 9 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Pakistan has sought the UN Security Council's intervention to ease the tension between New Delhi and Islamabad saying it threatened to escalate into a full-scale war. The situation threatens to erupt into a full-scale war due to "massive build up" by India along the border, Pakistan Ambassador to United Nations Shamshad Ahmed Khan said during a meeting with new Council President Ambassador Jugdish Koonjal Dharmachand of Mauritius. He called for the Security Council's intervention saying the Council had the primary responsibility under the UN charter for preservation of international peace and security. Khan said the "time has come to rise above power politics and political expediencies to address the issue of peace and security in accordance with the provision of the Charter," Pakistani sources said. "The current crisis is rooted in the longstanding dispute over Jammu and Kashmir on which the Security Council has adopted resolutions which remain unimplemented," he was quoted as saying. "Khan regretted that despite the gravity of the situation involving the risk of a full-scale war, the Council has remained indifferent to fulfilment of its charter responsibilities," they added.
