My point was that I did not know who “us” referred to. Now seeing that I am not part of “us” the source of my confusion is revealed.
I will say that in MOST Islamic societies women hold jobs, choose to wear or not wear a head cloth, and are free to walk about freely. The Koran gave women the right to work, to get inheritance, to own property, and to vote 1300 years ago. In the US it happened less than 80 years ago. When did women get the vote in England?
In MOST Islamic society, they would say the exact same thing you said about tolerance and a way of life that has evolved over centuries.

Force our views on people? We little people have about as much chance of forcing our views on others as you have of changing Bush or Blair's plans to do anything.
