Journalist Helen Thomas condemns Bush administration By Sarah H. Wright News Office
"...."I have never covered a president who actually wanted to go to war. Bush's policy of pre-emptive war is immoral - such a policy would legitimize Pearl Harbor. It's as if they learned none of the lessons from Vietnam," she said to enthusiastic applause."
"Where is the outrage?" she demanded. "Where is Congress? They're supine! Bush has held only six press conferences, the only forum in our society where a president can be questioned. I'm on the phone to [press secretary] Ari Fleischer every day, asking will he ever hold another one? The international world is wondering what happened to America's great heart and soul."
Thomas didn't let the press off the hook, though. "Everybody learned the lessons of Vietnam, including the Pentagon. In Vietnam, correspondents could go anywhere - just hop on a helicopter and report on the war. Now we don't have that access. It's total secrecy."

US midterm elections Republicans marshal poll watchers to intimidate Democratic voters
An indication of the methods to be expected of the Republicans on Tuesday was seen in early balloting last month. According to Democratic Party officials, on October 21 five Republican poll watchers showed up at the courthouse in heavily-Democratic Pine Bluff, Arkansas, a key district in the contest between incumbent Republican Senator Tim Hutchinson and Democratic candidate Attorney General Mark Pryor. According to eyewitness accounts, the Republican supporters only questioned African-American voters. Democratic spokesman Guy Cecil commented, "They were literally going up to them and saying, ‘Before you vote, I want to see your identification.'" Some potential voters were also photographed. Trey Ashcraft, chairman of the Jefferson County Election Commission, summoned a deputy from the Sheriff's Office several times to escort poll watcher Diane Jones out of the clerk's office for interfering with the voting process. Voter Bonita McCray told the Pine Bluff Commercial that she was asked by poll watcher Allison Johnson to produce her identification. "When she insisted, I put my ID back in my purse," she said. "They had no right to do this." Officials in the clerk's office, however, said that a number of voters were intimidated by the harassment and left without casting their ballots.

The re-election of Jim Crow: How Jeb Bush's team is trying to steal Florida again by Greg Palast Southern Exposure October 29, 2002 2002. globalresearch.ca , 2 November/ novembre 2002
"The company that put together this racial roster that fixed the election, DBT On-Line of Boca Raton, has now 'fessed up, having been sued by the NAACP for violating Floridians' civil rights. They have turned over to the NAACP's lawyers a report indicating that the state ordered the purge of 94,000 voters and that, according to the company's data, no more than 3,000 are likely illegal voters."
"Harris and the state admit that tens of thousands of black voters had been wronged, and with plantation noblesse have agreed to return them to the voter rolls -- at the beginning of 2003. In other words, the votes seized in November 2002 will not be emancipated until after the ballots are counted in the race between Governor Jeb Bush and his Democratic opponent Bill McBride." www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
