Package: pppoe
Version: 3.5-3
Severity: normal

Every now and then my DSL provider goes down for a few minutes for
maintenance, and when that happens, pppd doesn't attempt to reconnect,
even though I have 'persist' set in my provider line. According to my
logs, it just accepts its fate. From what I can find on Google, this is
a common problem, and most people end up just switching to the rp-pppoe
connection scripts. I'd rather stick with the Debian ifup/ifdown
scripts if possible.

Dec 2 05:30:37 zorkachu pppd[161]: No response to 3 echo-requests
Dec 2 05:30:37 zorkachu pppd[161]: Serial link appears to be disconnected.
Dec 2 05:30:43 zorkachu pppd[161]: Connection terminated.
Dec 2 05:30:43 zorkachu pppd[161]: Connect time 244.1 minutes.
Dec 2 05:30:43 zorkachu pppd[161]: Sent 727962 bytes, received 1054470 bytes.
Dec 2 05:30:43 zorkachu pppoe[164]: read (asyncReadFromPPP): Session 35729:
Input/output error
Dec 2 05:30:43 zorkachu pppoe[164]: Sent PADT
Dec 2 05:30:43 zorkachu pppd[161]: Terminating on signal 15.
Dec 2 05:30:43 zorkachu pppd[161]: Exit.

Is there some reason pppd isn't trying to reconnect? My
/etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider and /etc/ppp/options are attached, with all
comments removed, and since these are the stock configurations as
provided by Debian and because many others have this problem, I feel that
this is probably a bug in the default configuration or functionality of
the Debian package of pppoe.

Thanks.
