I'm sorry to add this so late, the discussion with the submitter was not recorded in the bug report.

My original response was:

The FAQ (http://www.xs4all.nl/~bsamwel/laptop_mode/tools/faq.html) has an entry on this, titled "I experience system freezes every once in a while, is this normal?". The answer currently reads:

"This is a bug in the Linux kernel, introduced in version 2.6.11, which is triggered by something laptop mode tools does. Try setting CONTROL_HD_POWERMGMT=0. This fixes the freezes for some people. Otherwise, for now, downgrade to a kernel 2.6.10 or earlier."

Do any of the suggested solutions help?

I will try them and let you know. I do worry that it will crash again as
it crashed with laptop-mode-tools using kernels 2.6.9 thru 2.6.12.

Yeah, I'll do that. Better safe than sorry. :/
