4) An option to select the directory in which the database resides
        (but leave the preferences in ~/.jpilot).

Why? Just store the database any where you want and create a symlink for
~/.jpilot pointing to the real location.


Why?  Because you want to share the databases, but you don't
want to share user preferences.    Jpilot puts them both in
the same directory.   If you symlink ~/.jpilot, you share
them both.   That's what I do, and it's not bad,
but it could be better.

You could do something more complicated, using
symlinks for every database file,
and a real file for the user preferences info,
but that would be a kluge.



I will report your request upstream. And see if a safe solution is
possible.
