This is not technically correct. You can make any derived work you want,
EXCEPT: if it rips (C) notices, all modifications must be marked, any
interactive-credits-printing must be preserved (section 2 of the GPL).
Those mods are prohibited even if you're not gonna distribute. If you
distribute the derived work, you MUST do so under the same license,
which is the GPL of course.
