Also note that due to the way TeX works this can, in principle, be done
even without that.  If you think your document should only be processed
with an unchanged version of foo.sty, you can look at every macro
provided *and*used*internally* by foo.sty and check whether it has been
changed.  Having the version number available is just more convenient...
