I know of no OpenSource implementation, but one (rather old) idea that seems
similar to MINA is the Conduits+ framework:

The similarity, to me, is a well-defined black box (favoring composition and
configuration) framework, that's plastic enough to implement any protocol.

However, since there's no reference implementation, imagine doing MINA with
no examples, and no API docs aside from the 'At a Glance' diagram found in
the powerpoints!
