Currently I am the moderator of the wiki at: http://ext.openoffice.org.nz I do not see the wiki as being mine (Iannz) but as a community resource.
Having only 33k dial-up everything is slow for me :). So I wasn't aware that others are finding the wiki too slow - it is good to get this feedback. The server and bandwidth are being provided free of charge and I am extremely grateful to the company that is providing this service for us. However, I too really want the wiki shifted to a server that is: * faster * more stable * recognised as being part of OOo. The wiki engine that Sun is providing at: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome (as you can see) is twiki. The wiki engine that I am currently using is dokuwiki. This means that I need to write (or find): * a converter between the two wiki formats. * a macro for converting from Writer documents to twiki format. * a twiki plugin for code/syntax highlighting. Sun are willing to use Dokuwiki if I/we put a good case, but I suspect that it might be just too slow (even on a better server). I am also investigating the possibility of using Writer as the browser/editor of a wiki directly. Copied below is the relevant portion of a message I sent to Jürgen Schmidt of Sun: ----------------------- I would like to bounce an idea I had while travelling home (read this as possibly jet lagged induced madness). I don't think it would take too much work to use Writer as a browser/editor of a "wiki" directly. Components would need to be written for creating new links (wiki style) and code high lighting - I think that I can handle this reasonably easily. And for authentication - I haven't looked into this yet. I don't think that the limitation of requiring Writer in this case is a severe limitation as all those interested in the wiki would have Writer. While it would take a bit more to set up, it could be a great experiment into the power that the ODF could bring. ----------------------- The last issue is one of copyright. What copyright should the material in the wiki be under? People at Sun are investigating what their people would feel comfortable with. While people may feel frustrated that things are moving too slowly, I am trying to move as fast as my jet lagged brain (picked up a bug during the 44 hours spent travelling and in airports between Koper and home), and other commitments allow. So I would welcome any assistance with any of the above issues.
