Additional event partners will be announced. The International Symposium is a dynamic one day conference exploring leading e-democracy trends around the world followed with field visits to area government and community e-democracy projects the next day. This is the world's first international conference focused specifically on local e-democracy. Plenary panel speakers and small group sessions will highlight leading e-democracy activities from all levels of government and society. Lessons highlighted will be applicable to local governance and citizen participation. A "tailgating" social gathering co-hosted by E-Democracy.Org at an outdoor minor league St. Paul Saints baseball game the evening of Monday, July 25 is in the works. * Agenda and Themes - July 26 The symposium will cover a broad swatch of issues and perspectives relevant to all levels of governance with an emphasis on local communities. Likely morning panel themes include: + Informed Elections - From e-voting to voter education online + E-Government and Democracy - Leading e-democracy practices in governance and civic education + Local Citizens and Community Online - Citizen e-activism, local blogging, and media online To get a sense of these emerging themes, note the UK highlights from the global e-democracy best practice research effort of the UK Local E-democracy National Project. + 60 Second Pitch Do you have an e-democracy project, idea, technology, etc. that you want to share? Can you explain it with passion in 60 seconds and one slide? Props allowed. Up to 20 of you will have a chance, but be succinct or the hook will pull you off stage. Stay tuned for details on the most energy filled 20 minutes on e-democracy ever. + Small Group Sessions You can help shape the agenda. Small group afternoon sessions, proposed online and convened by conference participants will allow extensive interaction among attendees on specific topics. On top of best practice exchange, sessions will produce "top ten" issues lists via the conference wiki web site for broad dissemination post- conference. To propose a topic use our sessions wiki page. We'd like to see topics like webcasting, e-mail response systems, e-democracy marketing, e- consultation and online forums, advanced technologies for democracy, wired elected officials, etc. Help lead the way as a session convenor. * Field Trip - July 27 Field trip plans include visits to the "wired" chambers of the Minnesota State Legislature and community blogging efforts in the rural college town of Northfield, Minnesota. See e-democracy in action. Along the way, short presentations will bring e-democracy to life as we travel through the "real" world. You will need to RSVP for this optional day (the price for the symposium is the same regardless) via our online conference registration system. * Cost We expect 50 to 100 participants, with space for 200 available. The fee for the conference will be a modest $125 US (~70 GBP, 102 Euros). The enrolled student rate is $75 US. This will cover your symposium participation. For those joining us on the field trips, transportation will be provided at no additional cost.
