I was more thinking of EtherCAT which seems a bit further down the road 
(http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Etherlab)

but then the example given on that page is just uncritical pin-wiggling; no 
idea how that would play in a motion context

any idea what the Mesa folks are using as Ethernet transport method?
