Unfortunately, the simple graphical widgets provided by various toolkits limit the flexibility in this regard. You have to make up your own custom widgets to get changes of color when selected or true/false. Maybe Python gives more options, but the Tcl/Tk widgets definitely have these limits.
The raised/depressed border scheme only works if you are very close to the screen, which is not the typical arrangement for EMC users.
