In regards to the screen shutting off - even setting it to never in the
power manager panel - it still blanks the screen.

Still trying other things but have not found a solution yet

xset -dpms s off

Seems to have fixed it.  I will put it in the application auto start.  Also
- in auto start - I disabled the power manager - that helped latency.
