Sorry, on reading my post the second time, I realize that it was a bit misleading: Yes, of course I use xinerama for my two monitors (well not really, I use nvidia twinview, but this also gives xinerama hints to the WM). I created several possible resolutions: for example "1600x1200,1600x1200" which uses both monitors and is seen by the WM as 3200x1200, and simple "1600x1200". The second mode is for when I want to use just one Monitor. There are everal reasons for wanting to do this: someone wants to work on the other monitor for example, which is also connected to anothe machine, or when I just want to save power for example. The switch can be easily accomplished without logging out of the current session by using xrandr. This makes it possible to resize not only the resolution but also to fit the virtual screen to that resolution. Currently, enlightenment doesn't notice a resolution change at all, which results in several windows being inaccessible after the switch. A restart makes enlightenment aware of the new resolution, but then I have to setup all my carefully placed desktop pagers, epplets, gkrellm, icq, etc. again. Pagers for example not only change in position, but also in size. aside from the usefulness for on-the-fly resolution switching, seperate setups for different resolutions also have the advantage, that it would be possible to regularly use the same home directory on several machines, e.g. laptop, desktop, and thin X-client, which typically all have different resolutions. This would tremendously increase enlightenments usefulness for me, and I think I am not alone there. I hope this clarified why xrandr is nice for a dual-screen setup. So, back to the original question: will anyone do it? ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.Net email is sponsored by: IBM Linux Tutorials Free Linux tutorial presented by Daniel Robbins, President and CEO of GenToo technologies.
