I've got some ReportLab expertise (but I'm sure Dinu has more).  I can
help with the badge maker.

My personal interest is to make sure the badge maker can handle non-ASCII
characters correctly.

Yes, although they are perhaps just a bit overloaded.

I agree with Jacob's criteria emphatically.  The name should be the
largest and the most readable thing on the badge.

(Or perhaps I just need to go get me some glasses...)
