Have been working on this same problem and just solved
it.
My configuration is a firewall on a 486 using
CoyoteLinux, 2 Mandrake 7.2 boxes and a Win95 box.
Had not tried the ifconfig command until I read this
email and here are the results:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:80:AD:B
8:75:10
        inet addr:192.168.0.101 Bcast:192.168.0.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST NOTRAILERS RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
        RX packets:352032 errors:43013 dropped:0 overruns:0
frame:64474
        TX packets:10303 errors:3 dropped:0 overuns:0:
carrier:3
        collisions:31 txqueuelen:100
        Interrupt:10 Base address:0xe000

Most of this I do not understand. What caused the
ping failure, though, was I had been pinging an IP
address assigned in LinuxConf (192.168.0.4).
Apparently, the firewall mapped the NIC's otherwise.
In any event, pinging the 2 linux boxes with the
correct IP from either linux box or the Win95 box gets
a response.
Note the difference in Bcast IP and Mask from the IP's
quoted below.

And now, for the really good news!
Win98 is installed thru VMware on one of the Linux
boxes. It pings out to everything on the network and
it responds to pings from anywhere on the network.

Hope this helps.
