I knit in public, in places like doctor's waiting rooms, except as now when I am doing lace knitting increasing on one side for the side seams, and decreasing on the other, for the neck. I would surely lose my place.

Most people have seen knitting and do not even give a second glance. Once a while ago (pre 9/11) I was in an airport waiting area starting an eastern style sock, with a ring of needles and about 8 stitches on them, and a thirty something male stopped and told me he remembered his grandmother doing this when he was very young. He watched for a half hour while I got it going because he used to as a child, thanked me and left. He wanted to buy me a coffee, but I couldnt knit and drink it.

One thing I do not do is knit when I am being paid to do something else, ie in meetings. My employer likes the appearance of paying attention.

My son, a law school student, told me one guy asked the teacher during class if he could bring in cards and play solitare as he did not have a laptop. Law school is about distinctions as to what is acceptable so the question was fair. All that mouse clicking can be distracting, which was the real implication of the question. Back in the old days, when I went, I used to take notes by hand, which would of course make it hard to knit. Otherwise, why go at all?

have fun, all.
