In both cases, you're depending on the company to stay in business. So are
your archivists, correspondents, and clients.

And to be treated like a criminal from the start is stomach-turning. Maybe
it's not a big deal to you, but I value my work *and* my integrity more
than the vagaries and bean counters at some scutty company.
