From the docs:

The first column displays the installation state with the 
following meanings:

      not installed
  i   latest version is installed
(i)  installed, but a newer version is available

fink selfupdate-cvs doesn't seem to do anything with these, nor 
does updating or rebuilding them. Is there a problem?
