Thanks for the suggestion! Trouble is that there is no choice! I killed 
on one of my machine fink altogether
and started roughly 20 times anew trying variants but simply no 
progress: fink does not work at all
since it always crashes when it attempts to install apt. So no choice!

On the other machine I still have fink but I cannot install or upgrade 
the essential packages that I
need also due to apt, libgettext3/8 and possible other packages. I tried 
very hand for several days.
So without some bug repair there is no hope.

In my last Emails I have documented in practice various crashes I have 
encountered. So I am blocked
completely.
