Alan,

I use a Heil Pro Set Plus HC4 element and the DX/Contest EQ setting on the
console. Stateside stations have told me it sounds great for DX with good
punch. And it works. I got Randy V73RY in the Marshall Islands on 20 SSB
during his last hour of operation before he left for the mainland. I use the
5000A barefoot to a 40 mtr Carolina Windom up 25 feet.

Now this all depends on your voice, but as others are saying, you do not
need to go to great lengths of EQ to get very usable performance from the
5000A.

On the other hand, people who use Flexradios do tend to enjoy trying to make
the perfect better!

Have fun.
