I must say (for myself!): if they won't open the protocol I am not interresting in taking part with an OpenSource flight simulator. But even when opening the protocol there are several problems to fix, e.g. different landscape information, setting the environment, ... So it is not only a problem of the protocol. I think the most simulators behing IVAO or VATSIM are commercial ones (M$) and those companies might not allow to use or exchange information about their landscapes.
