Probably the font: "fixed".

Normally this font is in: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"

This directory with the font: "fixed" must be in the: "FontPath" in: "XF86Config" or X will refuse to start.

So check the: "XF86Config" file and also the: "fonts.dir" file (in that directory) for XLFDs that start with: "-misc-fixed-" -- there should be several.

There can also be other more obscure reasons that X can't find the font: "fixed".
