Hi,

I was given two (old) portable computers in which I installed
FreeDOS.

After a few weeks experimenting with them and getting countless
corrupted files, I concluded that processor overheating must be
the reason.

I suspected overheating after noticing that in the first few
minutes after booting no errors appeared.

So I removed a lid at the bottom of the machine and began to
check the temperature by touching components with the fingers.
Within just a few minutes the processor really gets very hot --
almost to the point of burning the fingers. This does not depend
on work load: the computer may be doing nothing, and the
processor is equally hot.

I'm now experimenting with FDAPM and THROTTLE to reduce
processor speed, with partial success. Corrupted files still
appear, only in smaller quantities.

Today, for different reasons, I temporarily reinstalled the
original hard drive with Windows 98, and found -- to my
amazement -- that under Windows the processor is completely
cool, at least when the computer is not doing anything very
demanding. You can hardly notice any heat at all. But if the
machine is restarted in DOS (i.e., MS-DOS 7) it heats up just as
much as with a FreeDOS-only hard drive.

This is just the opposite of what I expected. I always thought
that it is easier for a processor to run DOS than Windows.

This sounds like bad news for me. I would like to know whether
all portables are like that (the one I'm currently working on is
a Compaq Armada E500), and whether anything can be done about it
in order to work in FreeDOS without endangering the processor.

Thanks,

Marcos
