I believe the solution to your shared object problem:
error while loading shared libraries: libppm.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
can be found in the following FreeSurfer archive:
http://www.mail-archive.com/freesurfer@surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/msg00090.html
Depending on what O.S. version you are running, you may need to link to a file with a different extension number. Do a list in /usr/lib and see what you have on your machine.
And thanks go to Amanda Grethe who recently hunted down this solution for me!

In the manual is says to try setting seed points using TKmedit.
However, when we try to open TKmedit we get:/home/opt2/freesurfer_alpha/bin/Linux/tkmedit bonobo.jill orig -csurf

Clearly we are missing something. The operating system was recently
upgraded. Is it possible something was left out? Any suggestions what
we might try?-Tom
