I'm using KDE 4.1 and loving it so far :).  I had thought it was a
problem/difference with Network manager 0.7+, which is a major rewrite from
previous versions.  I believe Ubuntu used the older version but I'd suspect
that 8.10 is going to use version 0.7.  And since you said that it works for
you I guess it's not a problem with network manager.  I really have no
desire to muck around with config files and scripts for basic network
functionality so I'll assume it's a driver issue and wait for it to be
resolved.
