this was meant to be somewhere in the documentation..

no, they are not compatible and can't be in the same used in the same cluster
(sharing the same multicast address, or reporting to the same collector gmond
if using unicast)

they are only warranted to be compatible at the XML level.

you got it, the upgrading path is :

1) upgrade your gmetad/web first (probably better to start with the topmost
   one if you have a hierarchy of them)
2) upgrade gmond cluster by cluster until you are done (be sure to upgrade
   the collector if using unicast)
