Hello, My reptile room has a window, and I use one of the portable air-conditioners. Like you I don't own a house yet, so this has worked. I hook it up to a thermometer. When the room gets above 82 degrees, it kicks on. I have not really noticed the humidity going up with my unit. I bought mine used for 75 bucks. TQ
