I just compiled gentoo sources 2.4.20-r7. First time through the compile failed. pretty cryptic messages seemed to refer to SMP. I went back in and added SMP support and the kernel built successfully. The problem is that it won't boot and it dies without logging anything useful. I whipped out the digital camera and snapped the screen where it died. I'll attempt to show what was there below:
