You should be able to switch out of X with a CTRL-ALT-F1. Then it's simply a matter of killall gdm as root. If you can't login as root I doubt it's a configuration problem - then again, root probably isn't allowed to login to X (unless you configured it that way.) What DE are you trying to open? KDE, Gnome?
