I had a similar problem a while ago... it is basically around the GL
screensavers that problems arise. I don't know if this was related to
me using the nVidia drivers, but I found that if you recompile the
xscreensaver package with lower optimisations, you don't get
lockups... I don't know how to debug this to prove it to you... I'm
just telling you my experiences...

I found that it was most reliable just to run the compilation with:

CFLAGS="-O2"
